ADVENT CALENDAR: MULLED WINE

For Day Sixteen of the cocktail advent calendar, I created a mulled wine recipe. It's not the holidays without some warm spiced wine.

For the drink:

-1 bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon (Alamos Cabernet Sauvignon-Argentina)

-1/3 cup turbinado sugar

-3 cinnamon sticks

-12 cloves

-8 allspice berries

-1 star anise pod

-4 black peppercorns

-1/2 teaspoon fresh grated ginger

-3 one inch pieces of lemon peel


Garnish:

Star anise pod


Glassware:

Glass mug


Add the cinnamon sticks, cloves, allspice berries, star anise pod, and peppercorns to a mortar and gently grind with a pestle. Place a large pot on the stove over medium heat and add the wine, sugar, and ginger. Stir until the sugar dissolves. Add the lemon peel and ground spices. Bring to a gentle simmer. Reduce the temperature to low and place the lid over most of the pot. Allow to warm for an hour before serving.
