Inspired by Max Diaz's bar. The Commander of the Armies of the North and General of the Felix Legions has an excellent collection.

For the drink:
1 3/4 oz Barceló imperial rum or similar Dominican rum
1/4 oz Laphroaig 10 year old
3/4 oz Simple syrup
3/4 oz Lime juice OR 1/2 oz lime juice and 1/4 oz grapefruit juice
For the garnish:
Lime peel
Glassware:
Coupe
Combine the drink components in a cocktail shaker. Add ice and shake until the drink is cold. Double strain the drink through both a Hawthorne and small mesh filter into your coupe glass. Garnish with your lime peel.
Max sent me a picture of his liquor collection and posed a challenge to make him a drink. I thought this would be a good riff on a classic daiquiri. The smoky peat of the Laphroaig adds depth to the cocktail that wouldn't be there if I only used rum. There are two variations listed above. The first iteration is just lime juice which provides a more tart flavor profile. The second iteration that combines lime and grapefruit juice has a more complex citrus profile. Send me a picture of your liquor cabinet if you want me to create something original.
